What ambient sounds do for focus.
Ambient music sits at the opposite end of the spectrum from beat-driven playlists. There's no chorus to anticipate, no drop to brace for, no lyrics to parse.
For deep work, you usually need the music to fade. The texture stays; the foreground noise of your day fades; you stop noticing time passing. That's the focus state worth designing for.
As ignorable as it is interesting.

FAQ.
Ambient music vs ambient sounds (rain, café, white noise)?
Different categories, often confused. Ambient music is composed (Brian Eno, Stars of the Lid, William Basinski). Ambient sounds are environmental loops (rain, café chatter, brown noise). Tonearm covers ambient music. For ambient nature loops, look at apps built for that specifically.
Is ambient better than lo-fi for focus?
Depends on the work. Ambient is best for deep, sustained tasks where any rhythmic accent would be intrusive. Lo-fi has gentle melodic samples that some people find motivating for warm-up sessions or paperwork. Try both — the answer is personal.
What's "drone" music?
Sustained tones, minimal change, often played at low volume in the background. Think Stars of the Lid, William Basinski's Disintegration Loops, Tim Hecker. SomaFM's Drone Zone is the closest to that aesthetic in our lineup.
Does it work as background music for video calls?
Technically yes; etiquette-wise, prefer to mute when others are speaking. The streams play in your browser, separate from your meeting app's audio.
